Virtual 3D Scanner
Real-time DFP-based virtual scanning of CAD objects
A high-resolution Digital Fringe Projection (DFP) virtual scanner that scans virtual or CAD objects in real time — projecting computer-generated fringe patterns onto the virtual model, capturing the deformed images with a virtual camera, and reconstructing the 3D shape. All processes run simultaneously and instantaneously.
Introduction
The virtual system consists of a virtual camera, a virtual projector, and a virtual reference plane. All virtual parameters can be adjusted to match a real-world 3D shape measurement system. To scan a virtual object in real time, the phase-shifting algorithm generates fringe-pattern images that are projected onto the virtual object through a virtual projector. The deformed images are captured by the virtual camera, and the 3D shape is extracted and displayed — all in a single real-time pipeline.
The key difference between the virtual scanner and a real-world 3D scanner is that the geometric relationship between the camera and the projector is precisely defined in the virtual setup, which is extremely difficult to achieve in a real-world scanner. As a result, 3D coordinate acquisition, reconstruction, and display are simpler and more precise on the virtual system.
